Kinosportcup

After the wonderful success of the 1st Kino-Sport-Cup 2011, this event returns every year on the weekend before Filmfest Munich: Filmmakers and non-professionals are asked to produce short films in only 35 hours. The films should have a length of 3 minutes and 50 seconds (they can be 35 per cent shorter or longer – opening titles and final credits included). For all those people who do not want to work solely on their own we offer the possibility to work in groups. You are asked to build teams for examples within production companies or TV stations; at film schools or educational institutions, at youth centres, schools schools etc. Of course it is as well possible to come to the Munich Film Society’s monthly Jour fixe to team up with others.
During the kickoff on Friday, June 17th at 11:00 pm, the film teams are given obligatory elements which have to be included in the films (e.g. key words in dialogues, the topic, the genre and objects which have to be in the film). This is part of the competition to make sure that film teams do not use pre-produced material. In the next step the film teams will have to work on this challenge which means they will have to make a film (from concept to production to the final edit and adding music) on their own within only 35 hours. They have to hand in their productions Sunday morning before 10:00 am. All films produced will be screened on Sunday at 9:00 pm; the teams will be introduced to the audience and the winners will be awarded…

Wer kann teilnehmen?

JEDE/R!

Who is allowed to participate?

Everybody can participate – it’s a competition for the young and the young at heart. All people are welcome to join the competition – professional filmmakers as well as beginners. You can work on your own on a film or you can work in teams &nhash; you are welcome to take part in this competition whether with your local bowling league or your football team; school classes can register as a team as well as any other group. For those people who are interested but prefer to work in a team, they can come to the Munich Film Society’s montly Jour Fixe or they can just as well be present at the kickoff on June 17th, 2016 at 11:00 pm. Here you can meet like-minded people and build teams or you can talk to already existing teams and team up. The number of people demonstration a team is not limited. Also people who are under 18 years old can participate given a declaration of consent signed by the parents or legal guardians.

Kostet das was?

Does it cost anything?

The entry fee is € 35 – every filmmaker or film team receives five tickets for the awards ceremony on Sunday evening. Those who need more tickets can buy those tickets under Tickets for 8,00 € (7,00 € reduced price). The shooting of your film is absolutely up to you, of course. There is no insurance by the Munich Film Society and you have to pay for all necessary costs. If you shoot your film exclusively with friends and available technical equipment, we accept that as well as if you invest some money in order to make your film especially magnificent and win one of our awards and perhaps to use your film later with other occacions.

Welche Bedingungen gelten für die Filme?

Which are the rules for the films?

  1. Length: 35 is the magical number at KALIBER35 Munich International Short Film Festival and that’s why the films should be possibly 3 Minutes and 50 seconds at the Kino Sports Cup, including opening credits and end titles (if existing). Differences of more or less than 35 per cent are okay, but films shorter than two and a half minutes (2’30”) or longer than five minutes (5’00”) are not accepted.
  2. Origin: You are only allowed to use material within the film or for the film which has been produced during the 35 hours after the start. If we discover prefabricated material, such as film clips, photos, music, poems, quotations, or whatever, the film can no longer be accepted. The production of the film – from the idea, the shooting, the cut and the sound recording to the post-production –must take place within these 35 hours. The employment of material used in the public domain is allowed as an exception (but that’s not very inventive ) if its employment, adaption etc. is not obliged to be mentioned. Don’t use it in case of doubt!
  3. Music/Sound Effects: … english …
  4. Elements: In order to avoid a prefabricated production we’ll give you some elements which have to be included into every film. These elements have been developed by the director of the festival alone and he will publish them only at the start on Friday evening at 11:00 p.m.. At that moment they will also appear on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/kaliber35. Please consider: there will be multiple elements. You won’t have any choice, you must include all elements in your film. How you include these elements is up to you – and you may be, you should be creative: the elements can be – if not explicitly mentioned differently – spoken, sung or presented pantomimically, real or animated shown in the pictures, directly or used as a pun or it might also occur in every recognizable way. If you ignore the given elements cold-bloodedly, you are out of the competition. In all other cases, only the director of the festival decides. His decision is irrevocable and should be accepted without any discussion.
  5. Credits: Please give your film a title of its own – otherwise our vote will be nearly impossible. Please make the effort to add the film title and the credits clearly. They complete the impression and belong to every film! At the very end of the film (usually at the end of the end titles) we love you to mention “Entstanden im Rahmen des KALIBER35 Kinosportcups 2016”.

And about the equipment?

The Kino-Sports-Cup is an event where the participants are allowed to use their own equipment. The advantage is that you are familiar with all your equipment but on the other hand we can not support or help you when it comes to questions or problems regarding the technical equipment. It is your personal decision what kind of equipment you use to produce the film. Everything is allowed! You are free to use wax crayons or perhaps you wish to do some puppetry with (home-made) puppets. You can as well use cameras of mobile phones or work with DV camera recorders or use HDV or DSLR cameras. You are free to use your Red or Alexa camera or if you are one of those lucky people who have access to a film laboratory on weekends – so we also accept 16 mm and 35 mm films. Our personal advice is KISS! We assume that the technical quality of your film only plays a minor role when it comes to the decision which team or which filmmakers produced the best film. The picture quality is not that important. We recommend to concentrate on the audio quality. However it is very important that your film which you will hand in on Sunday morning has the required format. When it comes to data storage advices we only accept USB flash drives (and of course you will receive it back in the evening). We only accept MPEG4 and H.264-Codec. This means the ending of your file has to be .mp4 or .m4v. We will not accept any other file formats. For all people who work with Mac – please note: no – we do not accept .mov! We do not accept files where the ending is missing! But no worries – no matter which video editing software you use (even when it is a really simple one) nearly every programme is able to produce the file format required. There are no restrictions when it comes to the display resolution. Just hand in the film with the display resolution which you used to make the film. You do not have to change anything when your film is recorded with the camera of a mobile phone. When your film is recorded in HD format than please do not change anything either – we are most happy to receive and screen your films in 1080p (1920 pixels x 1080 pixels).

How can I prepare for the competition?

Beside the registration and the payment of the entry fee, you should find or build a team (in case you want to work in one) and check your equipment.

How, where and when does the competition start?

The competition starts on Friday, June 17th, 2016 at 11:00 pm. Then the film teams are given the obligatory elements which have to be part of the film (key words in dialogues, the topic, the genre and objects etc. which have to be in the film). Up to that moment the elements are undisclosed. As soon as all elements are released to the participants you will also find all elements published online on our facebook page www.facebook.com/kaliber35. Than the clock starts ticking: All participants are now confronted with the challenge to produce a short film which includes the obligatory elements in only 35 hours. The films as well as the signed forms have to be handed in until Sunday, 19th June 2016 at 10:00 am.

What about the paperwork?

We only accept films which are handed in on Sunday morning together with release forms (everyone who worked in/on/for the film has to sign one!) and a film data sheet (sorry guys: these documents are in German only). Please save us the pain to key in all the data from usual forms and fill in the forms which you can find online. But the most important is the signed paper which is required to be handed in on Sunday morning. Please read the online forms thoroughly: Every member of the team has to sign and hand in the form confirming the transfer of right – but only one film data sheet is necessary. Please make sure that the form is filled in correctly and that you did not forget anything. Before you send us the film data sheet, don’t forget to print it. It is necessary to hand in the USB flash device together with the printed and signed forms on Sunday morning.

Can you gimme some advice?

The first and most important thing to mention here: the following is no condition for participation – it is only an advice. If you wish you can of course ignore this chapter.

  • Instead of concentrating on the technical quality of your film we recommend you to direct your attention on the plot of your film. A good story and only normal technical quality will be more successful than a boner in a brilliant technical quality.
  • Concentrate on the sound quality! Blurred or faded pictures can be interpreted as art (have you seen the films like „Distant Lights“ or „Wer früher stirbt ist länger tot“ let alone Dogme 95?) But when the audience is not able to follow the dialogues due to the poor sound quality your film will not be successful.
  • Direct your attention on the actors and actresses instead of concentrating too much on costumes, motives or effects. At the end of the day this is a competition for creative filmmakers who are gifted with the talent to think out of the box. Good actors and a good story make a good film. Well your film is of course not required to be as radical as the film “Dogville”!
  • … english …
  • Get some sleep. Well, this may sound strange to you. First we ask you to produce a short film in only 35 hours and than we give you the advice to waste that precious time. But we are convinced that this is a good idea. After the kick off on Friday you will definitely need some time to work on and agree on a good idea for the film. After you managed this step we recommend you to sleep for some hours even though it is very late ( or early in the morning). If you start working (in an efficient way) at 10:00 am on Sunday you still have more than eight hours to make the film. This is exactly the time a professional film team needs to produce a short film with a length of two or three minutes. And if you do not stay awake all night on Friday you will have enough power to work on your film in a cutting room. If you really wish to stay awake a whole night than choose Saturday night – because after you have handed in your film at 10:00 am on Sunday you will have enough time to sleep. The first screening of your film will take place at Sunday 9:00 pm.

Is there anything to win?

Of course! First of all experience, fun and new friends, and these are the most important arguments for participation. Furthermore you´ll get a complete short film – well, you have to produce it yourself, but without an occasion like our KINOSPORTSCUP, you probably wouldn´t get to a presentable outcome in such a short time. Last but not least: We have „real“ awards such as equipment, software, storage media, vouchers for services and/or cinema tickets. Stuff, that is meant to support and/or motivate you for your future filmmaking.

How do we find the winners?

On Sunday, June 19th, 2016, between the finish at 10am and a premiere at 9pm, a jury will watch all films and decide who will win. At the evening premiere, those teams will then be presented on stage and the awards will be directly handed over to them.

What happens with the films after the premiere?

By signing the forms you give the Munich Film Society non-exclusive rights to your film. This means that after the premiere, both we and you can use the films in many different ways and we should!
It is already discussed that the TV channel afk tv (in Munich receivable via antenna and the cable network and throughout Europe via satellite) will take the best films to broadcast on their program. We might also publish on the Internet and / or when we get enough great films together we would like to create a DVD collection. Should we get any revenue we would use the profit to aid our association, eg to promote non-commercial film projects or for the KALIBER35 Kinosportscup the following year.
You can and should also use and promote your film – why not try a short film festival submission! We would be happy to support you as we are a member of the AG Short Films and could forward the best short film to take part at the Short Tiger (FFA). Should you win prizes or generate any other revenues this certainly belongs to you alone, of course (unfortunately, this is not common practice at all kino sports cups)

Who is behind the KALIBER35 Kino-Sports-Cup?

It is organized by the Munich Film Society, a nonprofit organization serving the Munich Film family with a variety of activities like weekend seminars for training filmmakers on part-time courses in preparation for the ICC tests for production manager and assistant director or workshops for writers, producers and documentary filmmakers. Our own short and feature film productions are among the offerings of the club, just like the regular network meetings on the 15th of each month from 20.00 hours in the clock film.coop.
